{"id":3974,"date":"2012-03-06T14:24:53","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T14:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digitalheritage.org\/?p=3974"},"modified":"2023-06-20T13:20:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T13:20:53","slug":"ben-long","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.wcu.edu\/index.php\/2012\/03\/06\/ben-long\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Long"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ben Long, an internationally acclaimed American painter, grew up in Statesville, North Carolina.\u00a0 In the 1970s the then unknown artist persuaded the priest in charge of two small, rural Episcopal churches in nearby Ashe County to allow him to put frescoes, created by painting on damp plaster, on their walls.\u00a0 The result is a stunning series of biblical scenes, including Mary great with child and the last supper, using local people as models.\u00a0 The frescoes have attracted huge numbers of visitors.\u00a0 Their popularity led Long to paint more frescoes in churches and other buildings throughout western North Carolina, including Charlotte, Crossnore, Montreat, Morganton, Statesville, and Wilkesboro.\u00a0 Those who appreciate this revived art can enjoy them all by following the Benjamin F.
