Williams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The History, the work of 14 contributing authors, was published just as the award was presented by Western Carolina University at its 13<sup>th<\/sup> annual Mountain Heritage Day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Copies were delivered Saturday morning from the publisher and were on display in the Mountain Heritage Center where a new exhibit on the county was opened.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A 675-page illustrated history, the book has already been acclaimed by William S. Price, director of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History and Dr. Lindley Butler, coeditor of the landmark book, \u201cThe North Carolina Experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In presenting the award to the association and Williams, WCU Chancellor Myron L. Coulter said, \u201cif we fail to know and preserve our history at the grass roots, we reduce all history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The association under Williams\u2019 \u201ctutelage, cajoling and skillful pen\u201d produced \u201ca lively, sound, enduring, accurate and authenticated work that will stand well the scrutiny of native experts and scholarly critics alike,\u201d Coulter said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project grew out of the North Carolina 400<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary celebration when John Bell, a WCU history professor, suggested it in 1984.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; WCU\u2019s Mountain Heritage Award Presented To Historical Association The Sylva Herald Oct. 1 1987 The 1987 Mountain Heritage Award Saturday, September 26, was given to the Jackson County Historical Association for its new book, \u201cThe History of Jackson County,\u201d edited by Max R.
