It may also be used to describe hikers who walk the entire trail in segments over several years. Most single-season through hikers begin in Georgia, because Maine’s late spring shortens the hiking season there. Hikers resupply by mailing themselves packages to collect at post offices along the trail or by rendezvousing with supporters. They adopt trail names and often hike part way with others they meet along the way. Over 10,000 through hikers have been recorded by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy–a small fraction of the 4 million who hike on the trail each year.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_audio _builder_version=”3.11″ /][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.11″]

The following videos document the experience of three novice hikers as they interact with several Through Hikers on a North Carolina section of the Appalachian Trail.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.48″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_video src=”https://wcu.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Podcast/Download/89d20baa-82c9-42ee-9c09-8ee0912af9f1.mp4″ image_src=”https://dh.wcu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/hikers1.png” _builder_version=”3.11″]

[/et_pb_video][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.9″]

The Journey: Day 1 (7:58 minutes). Meet three beginning hikers as they plan a short hike along the Appalachian Train in western North Carolina. They discuss their experience levels, learning to use a map, and the challenges of steep trails. They also encounter Through Hikers and learn about trail names.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.48″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_video src=”https://wcu.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Podcast/Download/9d4d93b3-2cd1-4c94-85bf-0e75ead6f196.mp4″ image_src=”https://dh.wcu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/hikers2.png” _builder_version=”3.9″]

[/et_pb_video][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.9″]

The Journey: Day 2 (7:00 minutes).
